Area Students Pariticipate in Buena Vista University Spring Break Service Trip
Ten Buena Vista University (BVU) students participated in an AWOL (Alternative Week of Off-site Learning) trip during spring break, enabling them to volunteer their time and service with a focus on environmental research and animal rescue in Costa Rica.
Students concerned with environmental issues and conservation traveled to Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula to volunteer at the Widecast Sea Turtle Station, where they netted, weighed and tagged turtles, and collected tissue samples to check the endangered sea turtles for parasites before releasing them back to the ocean. They then went to a local elementary school in Matapalo, Costa Rica, where some students helped teach English and others worked to improve the playground by fixing signs, planting a garden so they can use the produce in their cafeteria, cleaning and picking up litter around the school grounds.

Students Selected for 2014 Buena Vista University URMED Internship Program
The Undergraduate Rural Medicine Education and Development (URMED) program has selected two students for its January 2014 scholars program, and on Monday, Jan. 6, they participated in a white coat ceremony and began their three-week internship.
The students selected for the January 2014 URMED internship are Natalie Bellairs, a junior biology major from Osage and Amber Riedy, a senior biology and chemistry major from Grand Island, Neb.
The URMED program was developed six years ago through a partnership with BVU and Buena Vista Regional Medical Center (BVRMC). Along with the URMED program, BVRMC provides learning opportunities throughout the academic year for BVU students who are pursuing careers in medicine and other health care professions.
The URMED internship is awarded to select BVU pre-med students who have an interest in practicing rural medicine. During their internship, the students are introduced to a variety of clinical and healthcare practices at BVRMC and other hospitals, including Humboldt County Memorial Hospital, Loring Hospital in Sac City and Pocahontas Community Hospital. The URMED scholar recipients are also each given a $3,000 stipend provided by BVU and the participating hospitals to help them cover the costs of applying to medical school.
